United States Grand Prix: Weekend Preview

This weekend, history could be made as Lewis Hamilton looks set to clinch a sixth world title, which would make him the second most successful driver in Formula One history. If Lewis Hamilton finishes eighth or higher, he is the champion, whilst if Valtteri Bottas doesn’t win, that will also secure it for the man from Stevenage. However will he do it in style or will it be another race where they have a fight on their hands?

On paper, it is a track that will suit the Mercedes’ strengths. It features many corners where the car is at home, corners where the car dances around a lot, most particularly the first and third sector. They will likely have an advantage in this part of the lap.

However there are many fast, sweeping corners and straights which will play to the Ferrari’s strengths, and they could possibly make up the losses in the two long straights and the fast sweeping corners.

I fear for Red Bull their final chance to win on pure pace has gone after Max Verstappen’s own goal in Mexico. They will likely be behind the leading two teams once again but will likely be in the hunt for the podium.

As far as the midfield goes, I suspect it will be back to normal with McLaren and Renault heading the charge, with Toro Rosso and Racing Point continuing their battle for sixth in the constructors just behind. It may be a stronger weekend for Alfa Romeo as the track suits their car better.

Taking all this into account my guess is the pecking order will be;

Red Bull
Toro Rosso
Racing Point
Alfa Romeo

Will Lewis clinch a sixth drivers title this weekend or will Valtteri Bottas continue the fight to Brazil? It certainly looks set to be an exciting weekend in Austin.
